How is it best to treat patients with uterine relaxation?

Patient's question:

I had my water break at four months of pregnancy. Is this due to uterine relaxation? How should it be treated for the best outcome?

Doctor's answer:

At four months pregnant, water breaking could be due to cervical relaxation, also known as cervical insufficiency. Patients with cervical insufficiency have less fibrous tissue, elastic fibers, and smooth muscle in their cervix. Or, due to the fragmentation of cervical fibrous tissue and reduced function of the isthmus sphincter, the cervix may present with pathological dilation and relaxation. The main manifestation is recurrent miscarriage and premature birth in the second or third trimester. You can ask your clinical diagnostic doctor to conduct a further detailed examination of the cervix. During pregnancy, MRI is an effective and thorough examination method. If a miscarriage has occurred, it can be confirmed after the menstrual cycle has fully recovered by using Hegar dilators.
