Patient's question:
Patient is 1 year old. According to the color Doppler ultrasound examination, an undescended testis was found 3 cm away from the left scrotum, still intact and smooth. It sometimes descends into the scrotum, significantly smaller than the other side, and is mostly not inside the scrotum. How many days does a child with an undescended testis need to stay in the hospital for surgery?Doctor's answer:
The definitive treatment for undescended testes should be completed between 6 to 12 months after birth, as this is the optimal time for orchiopexy. If the testes have not descended into the scrotum by 6 months of age, surgery should be performed promptly. For undescended testes in adolescents, orchidopexy should be performed as soon as they are detected. If at the time of surgery the testes are found to be atrophic or unable to descend into the scrotum, a testectomy may be necessary. If there is a congenital absence of the testes, no surgery is required.
