The battle stories or campaigns selected in the book are set against the backdrop of the Anti-Japanese War, faithfully recreating and describing scenes of blood and fire. The New Fourth Army's advances into enemy territory—such as the Battle of Jiangjiahe, which crushed the arrogance of the Japanese forces and inspired the enthusiasm of the people in the rear areas, boosting the confidence of New Fourth Army commanders and soldiers in continuing the rear-area resistance; the Battle of Weigang, which caught the enemy by surprise and achieved significant victories; the burning of the Hongqiao Airport, a daring move that had a far-reaching impact; the Battle of Huangqiao, where a victory was achieved with 7,000 soldiers against 70,000, playing a decisive role in developing the Anti-Japanese War situation in northern Jiangsu; and others like the thrilling Battle of Banataji for Self-Defense, the tragic Battle of Tangma, the fierce Battle of Liu Laozhuang, the arduous counter-"scorched-earth" campaign in Dawu Mountain, the smoke of gunfire on the city walls of Suining, and the sound of gunfire on Dàyushan Island, etc.—all demonstrate the New Fourth Army soldiers' fearless and indomitable spirit, their willingness to fight and struggle. They also showcase the superb command skills of the New Fourth Army leaders and the great unity and cohesion of the Huazhong people in their joint Anti-Japanese War efforts.
