Features: Ma Ji Hui, a middle-aged painter from Shandong, has devoted himself to painting for years, creating portraits of the 108 heroes from Water Margin. His artistic style is unique, with a distinctive aesthetic perspective. His brushwork is decisive, bold, and unrestrained yet refined, demonstrating great expressiveness, depth, and rigor. The strong color contrasts are highly stimulating. Renowned essayist Mu Hui selected several characters for commentary during his lifetime. His critiques are unconventional, sharp, and incisive, discussing both characters and current affairs, with a distinctive and unique charm. As the saying goes, there is one Hamlet for every person. Therefore, different painters have their own interpretations of the Water Margin characters. Ma Ji, living in Shandong, is close to the historical site of Liangshan. The rustic and straightforward culture of Shandong is reflected in his brushwork, ink application, color rendering, and composition, revealing a spirit reminiscent of Liangshan's waters. His use of color is bright and lively, with crisp and dynamic brushwork, making the figures appear vivid and lifelike. Another feature of this book is that Mu Hui, a renowned essayist, was invited to write an introduction at the top of each illustration. Tragically, he passed away halfway through his writing due to a cerebral hemorrhage, leaving the unfinished manuscript behind, truly pouring out his last efforts.
