How should trichomoniasis vulvitis be treated?

Patient's question:

Hello, I recently got trichomoniasis of the external genitalia. I would like to consult about this disease. How should I treat trichomoniasis of the external genitalia?

Doctor's answer:

Trichomoniasis is primarily transmitted by the vaginal trichomonas, with main symptoms including thin, foamy vaginal discharge and vaginal itching. Vaginitis is mainly treated locally. It is recommended to use Jie'eryin to rinse the vagina and external genitalia, followed by inserting metronidazole suppositories into the vagina for treatment. Metronidazole is a sensitive medication for treating trichomoniasis. If you have not yet had sexual activity, vaginal rinsing and medication insertion are not recommended. Instead, you may rinse the external genitalia and take oral metronidazole for treatment. Each treatment course lasts 7 to 10 days, and three consecutive courses should be used. Postmenstrual reexamination is required, with three consecutive negative vaginal discharge tests confirming cure.
