Features: On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World War II against Fascism, we have specially compiled and published this series of commemorative books. The series features a mix of Chinese and foreign writers, primarily focusing on medium-length novels, supplemented by a few longer short stories. It artistically recreates the magnificent scenes of the Chinese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, fighting bravely against Japanese invaders more than 60 years ago, as well as the global people rising up to resist the atrocities of the fascists. At the same time, it truthfully and vividly exposes the brutal and inhumane cruelty of the fascists, as well as the immense disasters brought to the Chinese people and people of all countries by that war. Justice will ultimately prevail over evil. Sixty years have passed since that dark page in human history. As peace and development have become the two major themes of the world's current progress, we should still learn from history, look toward the future, and strive tirelessly for world peace and human development, working to build a fairer and more reasonable new international political and economic order. This is also the original intention behind compiling and publishing this series. A Cold Night depicts the life of a small clerk in Chongqing under the rule of the Kuomintang Party from the winter of 1944 to the end of 1945. Wang Wenxuan, a loyal and honest old intellectual, was full of ideals during his university years, with many grand ambitions to save people and benefit society. However, after working in the old system for many years, his status grew lower, his life grew harder, and his spirit grew sadder. Eventually, he became a timid, subservient, weak, and resigned petty official who was willing to suffer humiliation. This is a pessimistic and despairing novel.
