Features: China's sustained high-speed economic growth has not only improved people's living standards and enhanced its comprehensive national strength but also increased China's influence on the global political and economic landscape. However, behind this high-speed economic growth lie many structural contradictions caused by institutional and development models. For example: the boom in attracting foreign investment is weakening the self-motivation mechanism for China's economic development; the low labor distribution rate in the economic growth model has prevented a large number of workers from fully sharing the benefits of economic growth; the household registration system has caused the efforts of migrant workers to be dissipated between their travels to rural and urban areas; the widening development gap between regions and the lack of a fair income redistribution system have led to increasing divisions and conflicts among social groups and between regions. China has reached a critical moment to re-examine its economic development model. The authors, senior officials responsible for formulating economic policies and policy research scholars from both China and Japan, not only summarize the characteristics and problems of the current Chinese development model in this book but also propose systematic policy recommendations on how to build China's future development model.
