Features: In the world, no river can match the Yangtze Three Gorges in possessing a 200-kilometer-long landscape gallery and a 7,000-year cultural heritage. Before the Three Gorges Dam was built, when people mentioned the Three Gorges, they would think of Li Bai's immortal verse: "Leaving Baidi in the rosy clouds, a thousand miles to Jiangling can be reached in a day. The monkeys' cries on both banks don't cease, as the light boat glides past ten thousand peaks." Today, when people speak of the Yangtze Three Gorges, they recall Mao Zedong's famous lines: "Build stone walls on the west bank of the Yangtze, cut off the misty rain of Wu Mountain, and create a level lake in the high gorges. The goddess should be unharmed, but she would be amazed at the world's transformation." The construction of the magnificent Three Gorges Dam, the transformation of the natural river channel, the development of hydroelectric resources along the Yangtze Three Gorges, and the blessings to the Chinese people—these were the dreams of generations of Chinese leaders and water conservancy experts. With the completion of the Three Gorges Dam, the dream has become reality. At the critical point where the Three Gorges undergo a monumental transformation from river to lake, we enter, we record, and we witness. What is about to vanish, we preserve in photographs; what is unfolding, we document in process; what is yet to come, we anticipate with all readers and send our deepest blessings. This book, in a richly illustrated format, presents our records, takes you into the grand Three Gorges Dam, and introduces the impact of the dam on the natural scenery and cultural relics of the Three Gorges.
