Features: The Westward Movement was the process of expanding and developing the vast western territories of the United States, lasting approximately a century. The regions involved stretched from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the Pacific coast in the west, covering an area roughly equivalent to three-quarters of the U.S. territory. The Westward Movement was an unprecedented and pioneering event, encompassing a wealth of content that was both extremely rich and important, far beyond what could be covered in just a few books. The monographs by Western U.S. history experts Parkman, Merk, and Billington are extensive and monumental works that made significant contributions to the study of the Westward Movement and remain essential reference materials in the field to this day. Even so, the book provides little detail on the cultural phenomena, social structural changes, psychological states of immigrants, conditions of minority groups, and the status and role of women related to the Westward Movement, or fails to mention them altogether. Later, numerous specialized works were published to address the shortcomings of the original book.
