Features: The History of Fudan University was published in two volumes in 1985 and 1995. On the occasion of the centennial celebration of Fudan University, we have revised and compiled the university history to mark the prosperity, which is the wish of all Fudan people. The historical materials of the past century are vast and invaluable. We must promptly organize and thoroughly explore them, cherishing the past and remembering the predecessors. The struggles of the past century have forged Fudan's ideals and spirit, which are the source of unity and inspiration for Fudan people, motivating faculty and staff to contribute to the nation. We must carry forward traditions and educate future generations. The development of Fudan over the past century has benefited the people and served the nation. Society needs Fudan's wisdom, and Fudan needs society's stage. We must highlight achievements and repay society.
Today's Fudan University combines the historical foundations and shared heritage of the original Fudan University and the original Shanghai Medical University. Fudan University is a private university founded by Chinese people, while Shanghai Medical University is a public medical college founded by Chinese people. In old China, both institutions started from scratch and faced numerous hardships. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, they moved to Chongqing together, enduring hardships and striving to maintain operations with unwavering perseverance. In New China, both institutions rapidly developed. In 1952, during the reorganization of higher education institutions, Fudan expanded and rose to prominence, becoming a microcosm of the development of higher education in New China. In 1959, both institutions were designated as key universities nationwide, making outstanding contributions.
In the new century, the two institutions merged their strengths, and Fudan's capabilities surged, gaining international and domestic acclaim. To protect and inherit the historical legacy of both institutions, the university compiled the Centennial History of Fudan University, the Centennial History of Shanghai Medical University, the Annals of Fudan University, and the Annals of Shanghai Medical University (collectively referred to as the "Four Books for the Centennial Celebration"). Among these, the Centennial History of Fudan University and the Annals of Fudan University record the history of both institutions since their merger. The "Four Books for the Centennial Celebration" adopt the styles of history and annals, with the primary task of organizing and preserving historical materials to serve future compilations of the university..
