Features: Readers who want to improve their Japanese skills should first train their listening skills, using listening to achieve skimming effects, and then read through the text repeatedly for close reading. Since all characters are accompanied by hiragana pronunciation, you can look up unfamiliar words immediately during close reading. Engage your hands, mouth, ears, and eyes. When you use all your senses to follow along, read, listen, repeat, and think, literature will unconsciously enhance your Japanese proficiency. Once you are familiar with everything, we hope you will be able to narrate the stories in fluent Japanese to others, training yourself and others in the process. This book is divided into three units. The first unit consists of medieval folk tales and modern creative fairy tales. Katsuyoshi Kusama was a very famous folk tale collector before World War II, and these tales were collected in Shukoku Monogatari. Mori Ogai, a literary giant of the Meiji and Taisho eras, adapted "Yamakoji Daijin" from Shukoku Monogatari into his famous work Yamakoji Daijin. The fairy tales in the first unit were created during this period, and creative fairy tales from the Taisho era onwards have also held a significant place in Japanese literature. The second unit includes works by three renowned writers from the Meiji period to the eve of World War II. Natsume Sōseki is a representative writer from the Meiji to early Taisho era, and "Yamakiko" is one of the pieces in Eikoku Shōsa. Though short, it is beautiful. The third unit is a poetry collection. Katsushige Ishikawa was a poet of the late Meiji era, and "Ichi Nukute no Suna" is his famous work, which is very well-known in Japan. Yayoi Kusunoki is an enthusiastic female poet and feminist, skilled in waka poetry, and her poems are also widely celebrated. Shigeo Kuma is a socialist poet. This collection includes folk tales from all over Japan; Japanese children's literature by renowned authors; short works by famous Japanese novelists such as Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Dazai Osamu, and Natsume Sōseki; and poems by three short-lived genius poets—Katsushige Ishikawa, Yayoi Kusunoki, and Shigeo Kuma. We hope that these rich, short, and classic works in the book will allow readers to once again achieve "multiple benefits," satisfying both lovers of Japanese literature and Japanese language learners with a dreamlike visual and auditory experience, continuously improving their Japanese language skills.
