Features: The content of Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (First Collection) is complex, and its ideological inclinations are not uniform. Although the themes are mostly derived from previous writings, they are re-created by Ling, reflecting the social reality and atmosphere of late Ming society, as well as Ling's own ideological views and indignation against the secular world. The works in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (First Collection) that hold cognitive value and positive significance can be mainly categorized into two types:
The first type depicts the thoughts, actions, and destinies of merchants. The Fortuitous Transport of the Han Merchant and the Red Lotus of Dongting Lake, and the Persian Merchant Who Discovers the Turtle Shell is the first to describe overseas trade. Through the depiction of Wen Ruoxu's entrepreneurial journey and path to wealth, it affirms the desire of merchants to become rich. Li Gongzuo's Clever Interpretation of a Dream and Xie Xiaole's Capture of the Pirate on Board portrays the phenomenon of Shen Lan and Shen Chun collaborating with thieves to rob and get rich. These works objectively reflect the surge in commercial activity and some characteristics of business in the mid-Ming Dynasty due to the emergence of capitalism, as well as the changing perceptions of merchants at the time. They demonstrate that merchants and commerce are further highlighted and affirmed in the novel.
The second type depicts love and marriage. In these works, Ling expresses relatively progressive views on women and marriage. Zhang Li'er's Cleverly Laid Bewitching Array and Lu Huiniang's Decisive Resolution of Fate portrays the heroine Lu Huiniang as having the insight to recognize her destined lover from a chance encounter ("able to recognize her floating-in-water lover"). It praises her courage and wit in using clever strategies to escape the of her abductor husband, Zhang Li'er, and elope with a lover she is truly in love with, reflecting a new moral perspective. Jia Xiaocai's Revenge Through Wine and the Machine Within the Machine tells the story of Wu Niangzi, who, after being deflowered, is not only understood by Jia Xiaocai but also joins him in avenging her honor, embodying new ideas. Luo Xijie's Firm Heart Amidst the Confined Space and the Swift News of Freedom in the Barracks depicts Luo Xijie's resistance against her parents' arranged marriage. The Autumn Swing Gathering of Court Ladies in the Xuanhui Institute and the Laughter and Tears of a Married Couple in Qing'an Temple portrays the struggle of the young woman Suge against her parents' forced betrothal and subsequent marriage. These works advocate for genuine emotions and oppose Confucian rituals, reflecting the ideological tastes of the urban populace.
