What causes fallopian tube blockage

Patient's question:

I've been married for several years and haven't been able to get pregnant. I went to the hospital for a check-up and was diagnosed with blocked fallopian tubes. What causes blocked fallopian tubes?

Doctor's answer:

Tubal blockage is often caused by induced abortion, spontaneous abortion, medication-induced abortion, induced labor, cesarean section, postpartum infection, appendicitis, insertion or removal of intrauterine devices, tuberculosis, prolonged vaginal bleeding, unprotected sex, pelvic infection, and tubal endometriosis, leading to adhesion, congestion, and edema of the fallopian tube wall, resulting in blockage. Symptoms include acute recurrent lower abdominal pain and a sense of heaviness; frequent urination and dysuria; purulent or bloody discharge from the vagina; accompanied by chills and fever, and may also include abdominal pain, constipation, or nausea and vomiting.
