Patient's question:
Female, unmarried and childless, with very little menstrual flow but a long cycle. After examination, it was found that the uterus is somewhat enlarged. Please ask what kind of disease is uterine enlargement?Doctor's answer:
Uterine hypertrophy refers to a condition where the uterus is uniformly reduced in size, with a muscular layer thickness exceeding 2.5 cm, accompanied by varying degrees of uterine bleeding. In multiparous women, frequent menstruation and consistent uterine reduction are observed, with the endometrium being normal or thickened, occasionally presenting as polypoid, but most pathological examinations reveal normal findings, with only a very small number showing fibrosis, confirming the diagnosis of uterine hypertrophy. It is important to differentiate it from uterine fibroids, especially when the fibroid nucleus is a single intramural or submucosal type. When the uterine body is uniformly reduced in size, it is often difficult to distinguish from uterine hypertrophy. Diagnostic (diagnostic curettage) and ultrasound examinations can help confirm the diagnosis. However, there are still very few cases where the diagnosis can only be made during laparotomy.
