Features: This volume collects the oral histories of Chinese laborers forcibly taken to Japan for mining, excluding coal mining. These mines had a total of 28 operational sites and involved 9,988 laborers. Among them:
Copper mining involved 6 companies, 9 operational sites, and 4,382 laborers;
Mercury mining involved 4 companies, 7 operational sites, and 3,077 laborers;
Iron mining involved 4 companies, 6 operational sites, and 1,397 laborers;
Other mining involved 6 companies, 6 operational sites, and 1,131 laborers. Due to harsh conditions, a brutal environment, and strict management, the Chinese laborers in copper mining resisted more fiercely. Notably, the famous Huagang Uprising was led by the Chinese laborer Geng Zun. This volume includes the oral histories of 114 individuals, covering 12 companies and 18 operational sites. Among them, the interviews with Geng Zun, Meng Fanwu, Zhang Qingxuan, and others provide a detailed account of the Huagang Uprising. The interview with Jiang Huamin also offers a detailed introduction to the struggles of Chinese and Japanese laborers in Hokkaido.
