Features: Most of the short stories in this book are from his famous work "Letters from the Mill," and several selections from the war-themed "Monday Stories" are also included. "Fan" and "Saff," are an extremely beautiful love story. The story is about a young man from the provinces, Jean Grass, who meets the beautiful socialite Fan Le Grand in Paris. Fan is a woman who lives for love, and she falls deeply in love with Jean. She is fifteen years older than him and has a complex and sinful past. Grass feels repulsed by this, yet he cannot help but become lost in her tenderness. They live together for five years, until Jean meets a pure-hearted young woman and wants to break up with Fan. But when he goes to see his lover for the last time, he realizes he cannot live without her. Jean accepts a diplomatic position in South America and wants to leave with Fan, but later Fan believes she has aged and feels exhausted by love, so she chooses to stay and does not go with him.
