What are the precautions before checking for vulvar itching?

Patient's question:

I got married last year. Recently, I've been experiencing lower abdominal pain, especially during my period. I'm very worried about it affecting my fertility, and I'm also extremely sensitive to cold and coldness. What are the precautions to take before a vulvar itching examination?

Doctor's answer:

Vaginal itching is often caused by the irritation of the external genitalia due to excessive abnormal vaginal discharge resulting from trichomoniasis or fungal infections leading to vaginitis, causing pain in the external genitalia. If antiseptic solutions are used to wash the external genitalia, vagina, or certain drugs are placed inside the vagina (such as sulfonamides, furacilin, strongly alkaline soaps, potassium permanganate solutions, etc.), it may trigger allergic reactions or recurrent dermatitis in the external genitalia, leading to itching. During menstruation, if hygiene is not maintained or rubber or plastic menstrual pads are used without frequent cleaning of the external genitalia, allowing menstrual blood or vaginal secretions to accumulate for a long time in the external genitalia; or if synthetic underwear is worn, keeping the external genitalia in a consistently moist and warm environment, these conditions often lead to vaginal itching.
