What causes bacterial vaginosis?

Patient's question:

Hello, I've been having vaginal bleeding these days, along with lower abdominal pain and increased discharge. I was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. What causes bacterial vaginosis?

Doctor's answer:

1. Indirect contact transmission. It is one of the spread routes of bacterial vaginosis. Touching contaminated toilet seats, bathtubs, hot tub seats, towels, or using unclean toilet paper can all lead to transmission.
2. Sexual transmission. It is one of the causes of recurrence. At least 10% of male partners of symptomatic women develop bacterial urethritis, and both should receive appropriate treatment to prevent mutual transmission.
3. Large intake of antibiotics. Antibiotics alter the vaginal microenvironment, allowing bloodstream bacteria to adapt, ultimately leading to recurrent local bacterial vaginosis.
