Features: The 5th International Academic Symposium on Comparative Musicology between China and Japan was held from December 1 to 3, 2003, at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Since 1995, the symposium has been held every two years and has been held four times previously at Fujian Normal University, Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Harbin Normal University, and the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts in Japan. This year's symposium was co-organized by the Institute of Musicology at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Over 50 scholars from Japan, Australia, mainland China, and Taiwan Province attended the conference, submitting 30 papers and delivering 12 paper presentations and discussions. The conference conducted extensive and in-depth discussions on the history of musical exchange between China and Japan, traditional music, music education, and musical composition, achieving encouraging results. Through this conference, we deeply felt that communication between scholars in the field of comparative musicology needs to be strengthened. Currently, our introduction of traditional Japanese music is still limited, and the issue of insufficient data is particularly prominent.
