Features: Wang Maimei Book Brand, established in the 1980s. In 1987, a book titled "The Spy Catcher" by a former British MI5 intelligence officer caused a sensation in Western society, and China Central Television reported on it during the News Broadcast. As a result, the domestic publishing industry was inspired, scholars and translators worked tirelessly to search for publishing information, and relevant publishing houses did their utmost to seize publishing opportunities. However, it was the unknown Wang Maimei who emerged victorious from the crowd, signing a contract with Changjiang Literature and Art Publishing House. Making his debut, he achieved a resounding success, with the first edition of his translated work "The Spy Catcher" selling nearly 100,000 copies. The victory set the stage for even greater success, and in the following years, his translated works such as "Royal Sisters," "Midnight Thoughts," "Nancy Reagan's Memoirs," and "The Unpublished Works of Mark Twain" were published, each becoming bestsellers.
After 1990, due to teaching responsibilities, Wang Maimei began to compile college English textbooks and teaching materials for the CET-4 and CET-6 exams. From then on, small and large bookstores near numerous universities in China continuously introduced best-selling Wang Maimei English books. Like a sudden spring breeze, a thousand trees burst into blossoms. Wang Maimei English became nearly the sole dominant force in the domestic college English teaching materials market, leading the trend for over a decade.
Today, the Wang Maimei English series has hundreds of titles, covering various subjects from middle school to college and postgraduate entrance exams. Its brand has gained increasing popularity among readers due to its exceptionally clear explanations of textbook difficulties and its accurate grasp of exam trends. Surveys show that many college and high school students across the country own Wang Maimei brand books, with almost every student having at least one. The level of popularity is evident.
The College English Test Band 6 (CET-6) is a national standardized exam directly supervised by the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education and organized by the National College English Test Band 6 Committee. This exam was first held in January 1989 and has been ongoing for nearly 20 years. Currently, it is administered twice a year, before the end of each semester.
Analysis of recent CET-6 exam papers reveals a trend toward assessing students' language fundamentals while emphasizing their ability to apply language comprehensively. This is primarily reflected in the following aspects:
1. The listening section has introduced a compound dictation. This comprehensive test format not only assesses students' listening skills but also evaluates their spelling, pronunciation, note-taking, and memory abilities. It is expected that the listening section of future CET-6 exams will continue this trend.
2. Reading comprehension is the most heavily weighted section in the CET-6 exam. Analyzing recent papers, it is clear that the reading comprehension section covers a wide range of topics, including biographies, social issues, culture, daily knowledge, and popular science. Among these, articles related to school education and university life, as well as those on sociology, psychology, environmental studies, and biographies, are most common. The CET-6 syllabus specifies that reading comprehension passages should include "diverse genres, such as narratives, descriptions, explanations, and discussions." However, recent trends show that explanatory and argumentative texts are predominantly used. These texts are characterized by their large amount of information, complex structures, strong logical coherence, and a focus on abstract thinking such as summarizing, judging, and reasoning. The main question types test candidates' ability to infer the central idea, main points, or details and facts of the passage.
3. Word usage and grammar structure remain traditional question types in the CET-6 exam, designed to assess students' vocabulary and mastery of grammar. Key areas include homophones, synonyms, antonyms, collocations, and distinctions between verbs, nouns, and adjectives. Grammar focus includes 13 types such as subjunctive mood, participles, and non-finite verbs.
4. Cloze is a flexible question type that tests candidates' ability to apply language knowledge at the discourse level, becoming increasingly common in recent years.
5. English-Chinese translation and short answer questions are relatively new types of questions that primarily test students' foundational knowledge while cultivating their ability to understand, analyze, and express in English.
6. Writing remains a crucial component of college English teaching, fully assessing whether students can meet the teaching requirements outlined in the syllabus and achieve the goals of comprehensive language application and communication skills. Recent exam papers show that outline-based essays, topic-sentence essays, and picture-based essays remain the main directions for CET-6 writing questions.
7. In addition to the above question types, we predict that the CET-6 exam may introduce a new type of question in the near future—Chinese-English translation. To help students familiarize themselves with and master this new type of question, this book will introduce relevant techniques for Chinese-English translation.
