The popularity of evolution was closely linked to the replacement of the intelligent design argument in British natural theology by positivism methodology and the naturalistic worldview. Under the dominance of positivism and naturalism, evolution became an exclusionary and dogmatic biological research program. However, contemporary research in biology has shown that the intelligent design argument possesses strong scientific explanatory power and has great potential to replace positivism and naturalistic evolution as a scientific research program, because intelligent design can explain many biological phenomena that evolution cannot. The development of contemporary information theory also strongly supports the intelligent design argument. Intelligent design is a suitable object of scientific research, and specific complexity is the standard for determining whether an object exhibits intelligent design. The authors also argue that science and theology are not inherently in conflict and can fully support and inspire each other.
