Features: This book has been published both domestically and internationally. The mainland edition features simplified characters in horizontal layout. The first printing has sold half a million copies. Since so many copies have been printed, I couldn’t help but review the book with the utmost respect for the readers. During the review, I found several places that should be revised. Previously, I had been reluctant to make changes, as these words, written under extreme conditions in life-or-death trenches, felt precious to me. But I couldn’t ignore the readers and hoped to smooth out some textual rough spots in the revision. These rough spots mainly manifest in two aspects. One is the rushed writing style, where I often (said a lot in one breath), forgetting to divide and regulate the rhythm. The other is slight verbosity, especially in urgent situations, where the writing becomes entangled. Therefore, this revision focuses primarily on paragraphing and (cutting down).
This is a diary that records my firsthand experience of traveling tens of thousands of kilometers to explore the ruins of major human civilizations. The purpose was to find the foundations of ancient civilizations, but I discovered that so many sections were overgrown with wild grass, scattered with battle trenches, and plagued by bandits. The wheels of my jeep ground along the ground, one kilometer at a time, completely unaware of what lay ahead. All I knew were a series of real and terrifying stories: here, religious extremists shot dozens of foreign travelers within minutes; there, in just two months, three groups of foreigners were kidnapped by rebel forces; further ahead, dozens of police had just been killed by drug trafficking groups.
