Kafka's Works--The Trial. The United States (Second Volume)

Author: Kafka
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2002-11-01
Features: This volume consists of Kafka's two other major novels, The Trial and The American. The Trial is one of his earliest recognized novels; the bank clerk Josef K., an honest and hardworking individual, is suddenly arrested on his 30th birthday, finding the situation absurd and ridiculous. After seeking information from various sources, he discovers that a secret court is investigating him. During an interrogation, he publicly exposes the bureaucratic corruption and miscarriage of justice within the judicial system. He attempts to seek help from those around him, but receives none. He tries to meet the judge to present his case, but in vain. Feeling helpless, he is ultimately murdered by two mysterious figures in a quarry on the eve of his 31st birthday. The plot is shrouded in mystery, reflecting the darkness of society and the corruption within the judicial system. The American is also a highly significant work by the author: At the age of 16, Karl becomes involved with a middle-aged maid and impregnates her, leading his father to banish him from the house in anger. He travels alone to America and, with the help of his now wealthy uncle, rises to prominence. However, he later defies his uncle's wishes and associates with "bad" people, becoming entangled with two hobos, reduced to serving others and working as a messenger in brothels. The novel is filled with comedic elements, both amusing and thought-provoking.
