Volume 1 Introduction: This book is designed to be a manual and easy to understand. It is written based on many years of teaching and research experience in retinal surgery. From the perspective of a beginner, it analyzes diagnostic methods, differential diagnosis, and minimally invasive external surgery for retinal detachment. The book is written in a conversational style to encourage critical and original thinking. It reflects daily practice and provides hands-on guidance for minimally invasive retinal surgery.
Volume 2 Introduction: This is a book that describes the art of minimally invasive external surgery for various retinal detachments, with a foldable cover suitable for fitting into a doctor's coat pocket, so it is always within reach of retinal surgeons. It reflects daily practice, the problems doctors may encounter, and provides checklists for how to address these issues. It is a summary of 30 years of research, teaching, and clinical experience in retinal detachment surgery. The book includes 6 chapters, expanded to 332 pages, with 233 illustrations, most of which are computer-generated color drawings. It is written in an easy-to-understand and conversational style, with key facts emphasized in bold or red boxes. The clear layout is designed to encourage readers to use it as a hands-on guide. In the balloon surgery chapter, readers are guided step by step through the practical application of simple to complex detachments. In the chapter on gas surgery, designed for retinal specialists and surgeons, it first explains the physical properties and biological effects of expanding gases, then applies this knowledge to clinical environments and a wide range of applications. The illustrative guides provided help better understand and are convenient for reference during ward rounds or in the operating room. The diagrams show how different gas techniques can be applied to various retinal detachments that are not suitable for external padding. However, the center of any treatment concept is the retinal hole. Even if some small steps are needed to reposition the complex structure of the hole, our goal is primarily to perform minimally invasive external surgery.
Throughout the chapters, contemporary techniques for repositioning surgery are discussed and compared, namely minimally invasive external padding (balloon, segmental sponge) and intraocular surgery (gas, initial vitrectomy). The complications caused by surgery and the rate of reoperation are evaluated. The book takes readers into the current discussions on the pros and cons of these surgeries. The final chapter on reoperation represents the ultimate realization of minimally invasive external surgery. The idea remains the same: find and close the hole, avoid unnecessary surgeries, and perform as much of the procedure externally as possible, with only minimal surgical trauma. Our goal is to minimize surgical damage. That is, "a small surgery is better than a large one, and two small surgeries are better than one, even for reoperation on the eye." The clear guidelines, easy-to-use checklists, and additional rules for identifying postoperative holes and failed surgeries will help retinal surgeons achieve the challenging goal of practicing minimally invasive external surgery for retinal detachment.
