Features: How should one live in this world? In this world, one must both do things and be a person. To stand firm in society and achieve something, one should first be a person and then do things. The Analects can be read by some and leave them entirely unaffected; by others, it may bring a sense of joy from one or two passages; by others, it may lead to an appreciation of its beauty; and by others, it may inspire them to dance with joy. I, Cheng Yi, began reading the Analects at the age of seventeen or eighteen and already understood its meaning at the time. The longer I read it, the more profound its meaning became.
The Value of Confucianism and the Analects
The value of the Analects, regardless of any era or region, remains timeless and irreplaceable as long as its original meaning is not distorted. Those who come after must study it diligently, think carefully, discern clearly, and integrate its wisdom to achieve self-awareness.
In the modernization of our nation, we must rebuild our national spirit, and to forge this spirit, we cannot be separated from the traditional culture of the Chinese nation. In the thousands of years of Chinese history, no thinker or writer has been unaffected by this book.
This book is a collection of dialogues between the great ancient Chinese thinker, educator, and philosopher Confucius and his students, a highly influential Confucian classic in the history of ancient Chinese thought, culture, and education. The compilation of this book was completed by Confucius's students and their disciples, likely around the early Warring States period. The name Analects comes from the Book of Han·Bibliography by Ban Gu, which states that the Analects are the words of Confucius responding to his disciples and the conversations among the disciples that were heard by Confucius. At the time, each disciple recorded what they remembered. After Confucius's death, his disciples compiled and edited these records, hence the name Analects.
Although the Analects was compiled by Confucius's students and their disciples and is written in concise language, it is a concentrated expression of Confucius's thoughts.
