Features: Feng Deying (1935–), contemporary writer. Born into a poor peasant family in Mouping, Shandong (now part of Rushan), he was deeply influenced by the struggles of the revolutionary era. He attended primary school for five years, served as a children's leader, and was nurtured and educated by the life of the war years. In early 1949, he joined the People's Liberation Army, where he had the opportunity to read a large number of Chinese and foreign literary works and cultural books over the following years. In 1954, he began writing the novel Bitter Herbs, which, after more than two years of hard work, was published and translated into Japanese, Russian, English, and other languages. He served as a writer for the Cultural Department of the Air Force Political Committee and later became the president of the Shandong Writers' Association and the editor-in-chief of Quancheng. He also published other novels such as Spring Blossoms, Mountain Chrysanthemums (which won the first prize for outstanding novels from the People's Liberation Army Literature Publishing House), and the trilogy Earth and Flowers (including Blood-Stained Land), as well as some short stories, essays, and film scripts. Feng Deying's "Three Flowers" series of novels vividly reflects the arduous, heroic, and tenacious revolutionary struggles of the people in the Jiaodong Peninsula. The plots are full of twists and turns, the language is fresh and flowing, and the character portrayals are delicate and vivid, with a lyrical and rural charm.
