Features: This book is compiled by Cheng Hong and Chen Maosheng from the School of Life Sciences, Peking University. Based on the construction of animal morphology and the evolutionary path from single-celled to multi-celled organisms, from simple to complex, from lower to higher animals, from invertebrates to vertebrates, and from aquatic to terrestrial environments, a total of 21 animal science experiments are arranged. Each experiment includes principles, methods, and procedures. This book is suitable for undergraduate students of life sciences and related disciplines in higher education institutions, as well as for reference by relevant teachers. The book guides students to understand animals from the vast knowledge base of animal science through two lines of thought: one is the construction of animal morphology, from cells, tissues, organs, to systems, and then to the whole animal; the other is the evolutionary process of animals from single-celled to multi-celled, from simple to complex, from lower to higher, from invertebrates to vertebrates, and from aquatic to terrestrial environments. To help readers clearly see these two lines of thought in experiments, the book is organized into three parts: (1) animal cytology and histology, as well as animal development; (2) protozoa and invertebrates; (3) chordates. The book first introduces basic knowledge of animal experiments, such as drawing requirements, dissection tools and their use, precautions for using microscopes, dissection sections and orientation, and general dissection methods. It then arranges 21 experiments, with the first 7 experiments focusing on the construction of animal morphology. Experiments 8–15 include observations and dissections of representative animals of protozoa and important groups in the evolutionary lineage of invertebrates, such as sponges, coelenterates, flatworms, nematodes, annelids, arthropods, and echinoderms. Experiments 16–21 focus on the dissection structures and main taxonomic groups of representative animals on the evolutionary lineage of chordates, such as amphioxus, bony fish, toad, skink, domestic chicken, and domestic rabbit. Each experiment introduces the purpose, methods, specific steps and sequence, and precautions, followed by assignments and discussion questions. The book has strong theoretical foundations, logical order, and instructional guidance, and is richly illustrated, allowing students to learn and operate independently. In specific teaching, instructors can select, segment, and combine experiments from the book based on their teaching content, time, and conditions. The cytology and histology part of the book is written by Chen Maosheng, while the rest is written by Cheng Hong. Mr. Li Shaowen provided the "Simple Key to the Orders of Adult Insects." The entire book was compiled by Cheng Hong.
