This book tells the story of Zhang Zuolin, a former warlord from humble beginnings in old China, who lacked resources but possessed cunning and wisdom. During a time of national crisis, he seized the opportunity to rise from commanding a private army to becoming the powerful ruler of Manchuria and Mongolia, renowned throughout the region. He launched two direct-Suncho wars and led his troops into the Guandong region, reaching the pinnacle of his ambitious career—becoming the Grand Marshal of the Republic of China's National Army and Navy (the highest national leader at the time). However, his fortune did not last. Under the pressure of the Northern Expeditionary Army, his forces retreated step by step, forcing him to return to the Guandong region once more. Additionally, due to his repeated refusal to sign unequal treaties under Japanese coercion, he was assassinated by the Japanese in Houghton Station.
This book is highly readable, with vivid character portrayals. Though fictional, it is as credible as history, free from dramatic embellishments, leaving readers to ponder deeply upon finishing it.
