What causes appendicitis?

Patient's question:

I have been experiencing lower abdominal pain for a while, with pain on both sides. My vaginal discharge is also a bit abnormal, appearing purulent. It might be appendicitis. Now I don't know what to do. Could you please tell me what causes appendicitis?

Doctor's answer:

There are several causes of adnexitis. Some include neglecting personal hygiene. It should be noted that the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD) does not directly cause adnexitis. Inflammation may occur only if the IUD is inserted without strictly following sterile operating procedures or if it is inserted during menstruation. Intercourse during menstruation can introduce bacteria into the reproductive tract. Intercourse during menstruation is not only a trigger for adnexitis but also a common cause of other gynecological infections. When the immune system is weakened, pathogens can descend through the reproductive tract, infect and spread to the fallopian tubes and ovaries, subsequently affecting the entire pelvic cavity. If adjacent organs such as the appendix become inflamed again, it can lead to direct spread, resulting in tubo-ovarian abscess or pelvic peritonitis. Inflammation typically occurs on the adjacent fallopian tube and ovary.
