Features: This Dictionary of Ancient Chinese is a medium-sized language tool book designed for readers with intermediate to advanced cultural backgrounds to study ancient Chinese and read classical texts. The scope of words included in this dictionary consists of representative classical texts written in orthodox written language in ancient times, with a focus on texts from the Pre-Qin and Han dynasties. The dictionary contains approximately 10,000 single characters, including both commonly used characters and some difficult ones, such as those used in names of people and places. Common variant characters are also included. The dictionary covers about 24,000 multi-syllabic terms. Most of these terms are lexical in nature, while a small number of encyclopedic entries are also included. The general principle is to select entries that are commonly found in classical texts but require explanation, based on the actual needs of readers reading ancient books. The dictionary is arranged in phonetic order. If a character head has multiple pronunciations, it appears in the main text under all its pronunciations. If other pronunciations differ in initial consonants or final vowels from the first pronunciation, the character head is also repeated under these pronunciations. Characters with two or more pronunciations are labeled with numbers (1, 2, 3), with the most common pronunciation generally listed first.
