Is it normal for breast milk not to have a milky smell?

Patient's question:

Female, 31 years old, recently I've noticed a problem: why does my breast milk not have a taste, unlike formula which has a milky aroma. I want to know if this is normal?

Doctor's answer:

This varies from person to person. It doesn't mean that breast milk lacks nutrition just because it doesn't have a strong milky smell. Some moms are quite clean and will immediately change and wash their baby's clothes when the baby spits up milk. During each feeding, they also cover the baby's neck with a scarf, so the baby won't smell a strong milky aroma after drinking. Whether there's a milky smell isn't important; as long as the baby is willing to eat and play, it's normal.
