Can you get pregnant a few days before your period?

Patient's question:

Female, 29 years old. Previously, my menstrual cycle was always very normal, but recently I've been feeling lower abdominal pain, and my period has been delayed. I don't know what's wrong. Please ask: Can I get pregnant if I have sex a few days before my period?

Doctor's answer:

Women with a normal menstrual cycle typically ovulate around day 14 of their cycle. The fertile window, or "dangerous period," for women is the four days before and five days after ovulation, during which the chances of pregnancy are relatively high. However, the five days before and four days after the start of menstruation are considered the "safe period," with significantly lower chances of pregnancy. If intercourse occurs three days before menstruation, the chances of pregnancy are even lower. Therefore, if the menstrual cycle is normal, intercourse during the first three days of menstruation does not necessarily require breastfeeding.
