Will there be residual after medication abortion?

Patient's question:

I am a 26-year-old female. Recently, I have been feeling quite tired, and my body has been feeling unwell. Could this be due to this illness? I would like to ask: Is there a possibility of residual tissue after medication abortion?

Doctor's answer:

Post-medical abortion follow-up color ultrasound examination reveals residual tissue in the uterine cavity, requiring a hospital visit for a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) procedure. It is recommended to undergo the D&C as soon as possible to avoid the risk of missed abortion due to prolonged delay, which could affect the pregnant woman's coagulation function and lead to severe bleeding. In this case, the D&C should be performed first, with ultrasound guidance. If the D&C successfully removes the tissue, a hysteroscopy may not be necessary. However, if the D&C is not effective, a hysteroscopy will be required. Hysteroscopy allows for direct visualization and electric resection.
