Can a rotatory placenta reach term?

Patient's question:

Doctor, I am a pregnant woman, 26 years old. I also had an ultrasound examination and various physical examinations at that time. Can rotund placenta reach full term?

Doctor's answer:

The incidence of rotund placenta is less than 1/6000. It refers to a central indentation on the fetal surface of the placenta, surrounded by a thickened grayish-white ring. This ring is formed by double-layered amnion and chorion, with atretic decidua and fibers in between. Within the ring, the fetal surface typically appears, adhering to the umbilical cord, where major blood vessels are often interrupted at the edge of the ring. Scattering the thickened amniotic villous tissue may split the placental membrane and lead to infarction. It is recommended that you follow your doctor's advice and choose an appropriate delivery method. It is possible to have a full-term vaginal delivery.
