How long does it take to produce a batch of sperm?

Patient's question:

We have frequent intercourse, and sometimes we achieve ejaculation twice in one night. Will the sperm become immature? If we abstain for a week between intercourse, will the sperm return to normal?

Doctor's answer:

It takes about three months for sperm to develop from spermatogonia to a mature sperm. From the beginning of sperm production in the testes to the stage of becoming tadpole-like, this process takes about one and a half months. Although sperm expelled from the testes are already formed, they are not yet mature and need to be stored in the epididymis before they can mature further. The number of sperm in the epididymis is generally in a dynamic equilibrium state, with old sperm being phagocytosed by macrophages every day, while new sperm are constantly maturing.
