Does having leukorrhea mean there are problems with the cervix?

Patient's question:

I have cervical inflammation caused by abnormal vaginal discharge, but the test report says the vaginal discharge is normal. What is going on?

Doctor's answer:

Leukorrhea is formed by shed epithelial cells from the cervix and vagina, as well as secretions. Therefore, any abnormalities in leukorrhea color, odor, or texture suggest inflammation in the vagina and cervix. If a routine leukorrhea examination shows no issues, it indicates that there is no inflammation or erosion in the vagina or cervix. However, it does not prove that there are no abnormalities in the cervical epithelial cells. It is recommended to have a cervical smear test every six months.
Inflammation of the cervix includes various types, such as cervical erosion, cervical polyps, cervical hypertrophy, and Nabothian cysts. Whether leukorrhea is normal is not closely related to the cervix; the main focus should be on observing whether there is vaginitis.
