Is a umbilical cyst always a malformation?

Patient's question:

My wife is now four months pregnant. During the prenatal check-up, the doctor told me that the fetus has a cyst in the umbilical cord. Will it affect the child? Is an umbilical cord cyst a malformation?

Doctor's answer:

If a woman has a 4D ultrasound examination at 24 weeks of pregnancy and finds a cord cyst, but the fetus's growth and development are normal, and there are no abnormalities in solid organs, and the cyst is less than 5 centimeters, it is usually possible to consider continuing the pregnancy. A follow-up ultrasound can be performed after half a month to monitor changes in the size of the cyst. Alternatively, amniocentesis can be considered to further confirm whether there are any chromosomal abnormalities. If there are no chromosomal abnormalities, it is usually possible to continue the pregnancy, indicating that there are no developmental issues with the fetus.
