What is the meaning of a frozen-thawed embryo

Patient's question:

Doctor, hello, my husband and I are undergoing in vitro fertilization. Could you please explain what frozen-thawed embryos mean?

Doctor's answer:

Frozenthawed embryo transfer is a part of in vitro fertilization. For individuals with normal ovarian reserve, it is generally recommended to retrieve 10-20 eggs, which are then used to create 7-8 embryos. In a fresh transfer, 1-2 embryos are placed, while the remaining embryos are cryopreserved, known as frozen embryos. Frozenthawed embryo transfer involves thawing the embryos for transplantation. Clinically, it is stipulated that they can be thawed and transplanted within five years. However, the impact on the fertility function of the embryo itself, or on microgene expression and epigenetics, remains unclear. For patients under the age of 35, the success rate can reach 70%.
