Is it normal to bleed when taking a TCT sample?

Patient's question:

Sister is 27 years old, she just went for a TCT test and came back with a little bit of mild bleeding. The amount of bleeding wasn't much, and she didn't have any other symptoms. I just wanted to ask if it's normal to have a little bleeding during the TCT test?

Doctor's answer:

A tCT examination of the cervix is performed using a brush to collect cervical cells. During the procedure, if the symptoms of acute cervicitis are severe, there may be a risk of skin tearing. If the bleeding is not significant, it can be temporarily monitored. However, if the bleeding is heavy and accompanied by abdominal pain or an unpleasant odor, it is still recommended to seek medical attention.
Recommendations:
- Both partners should practice cleaning before and after sexual activity.
- If a man has phimosis, the foreskin should be treated first, as smegma is the most likely cause of cervical lesions.
- If condoms are used consistently every time, the risk of cervical lesions can be significantly reduced.
