Can fetal heart monitoring reveal the gender?

Patient's question:

Many expectant fathers and mothers enjoy playing the game of guessing the baby's gender through fetal heart monitoring. I am also pregnant now. Can fetal heart monitoring reveal whether it's a boy or a girl?

Doctor's answer:

Fetal heart monitoring only monitors the heartbeat of the fetus. If the fetal heart rate is too fast or too slow, it is not normal. Generally, a normal fetal heart rate is between 135 and 170, and fluctuations within this range are considered normal. It is not possible to determine if the baby is a boy or a girl from the fetal heart rate. These claims have no scientific basis. You can only find out if the baby is a boy or a girl after the third month of pregnancy by getting an ultrasound at the hospital.
