Can a placenta residue of 2 cm be absorbed autonomously?

Patient's question:

I was on day 48 of pregnancy when I took mifepristone and misoprostol orally for an abortion. However, five days after taking them, I had severe abdominal pain. When I went to the hospital for a check-up, they found that there was placental residue. Can it be absorbed on its own?

Doctor's answer:

At forty-eight days of pregnancy, if the placenta has not yet formed, if a medication abortion is performed and it is not completely expelled, with residual tissue in the uterine cavity, medication or a D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure is generally required. The likelihood of the body absorbing the residual tissue is low. You can choose to have a D&C directly, or first use herbs like Motherwort ointment, and then recheck after three or four days to see if the residual tissue can be expelled. If it still cannot be expelled, a D&C will be necessary. It is best to seek medical attention promptly, and a D&C may be required if necessary.
