Is it necessary to pump out milk at night?

Patient's question:

I am 30 years old this year and am still breastfeeding. Recently, I've been thinking about weaning my baby as he has grown. I am currently experiencing engorgement, and since I have never given birth before and lack experience, I would like to ask if I need to express my milk at night?

Doctor's answer:

If the engorgement can be tolerated, there is no need to express milk, as the milk will naturally decrease and eventually stop due to the lack of stimulation. If the engorgement is unbearable, a small amount of milk can be expressed to relieve discomfort caused by the engorgement, but it should not be completely emptied. Doing so may stimulate milk production. During weaning, oral consumption of items such as grain sprouts, wheat sprouts, light fermented soybeans, young pigeon, and pig liver can help reduce milk supply, but it is not recommended to use medication for weaning.
