Patient's question:
My colleague is doing IVF. Today we talked about high-quality embryos. What is a high-quality embryo?Doctor's answer:
A high-quality embryo is a vague concept. Some reproductive centers define a high-quality embryo as one that is normal on the first day of fertilization, meaning the male and female pronuclei (IPN) are properly formed. On the second day, the embryo is expected to develop to the 2-4 blastomere stage. By the third day, it should reach the 7-9 blastomere stage, with fragmentation less than 25%, uniform blastomere size, no multinucleation, minimal or no vacuoles, and a normal zona pellucida. Morphologically, the best embryo is one with a normal fertilized egg developing to 3-5 blastomeres on the second day and 7-10 blastomeres on the third day, with uniform size and all other conditions normal.
