Is pelvic inflammatory disease the same as adnexitis?

Patient's question:

I am a 73-year-old woman and don't know why I suddenly got sick. I also feel uncomfortable. Please ask: Is pelvic inflammatory disease the same as adnexitis?

Doctor's answer:

We just mentioned at the very beginning that pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is actually an infectious disease of the upper genital tract, including salpingitis, tubo-ovarian abscess, and pelvic peritonitis. So, when we refer to "adnexa," we usually mean the fallopian tubes and ovaries. In reality, adnexitis is only a small part of PID. In clinical diagnosis, it is difficult to distinguish between them because a physical examination often reveals that tubo-ovarian abscess, to some extent, triggers pelvic adhesions, which in turn involve peritonitis. It is hard to differentiate them.
