Adjectives are categorized into two usages: as attributive or as predicative. The verb pattern table is reorganized and placed at the end of the book. The translation complies with Chinese norms, emphasizing both English-Chinese explanations. This book was originally titled "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English" (abbreviated as OALD). Since its publication, the English version has undergone three revisions and has been widely popular worldwide for over 40 years in the second half of the 20th century, receiving enthusiastic acclaim from readers. In 1988, with permission from Oxford University Press, our press published and distributed the Simplified Chinese edition of "The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English" (Simplified Chinese version), whose English text is the third edition of this dictionary. In 1989, Oxford University Press released the fourth edition of the English version, supervised by renowned linguist A. P. Cowie, which comprehensively revised the third edition, increasing the content by more than 50% compared to the third edition. Updates were made in various aspects such as word selection, phonetics, definitions, examples, usage explanations, sentence pattern symbols, and the inclusion of idioms, making the content richer, more practical, and more aligned with the needs of English learners in non-English-speaking countries. It is considered one of the finest English dictionaries of today. In 1994, the English-Chinese edition of the dictionary was released, with the title changed to "The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of English-Chinese". With the permission of Oxford University Press, our press was authorized to publish and distribute the Simplified Chinese version of the English-Chinese edition, which is the book presented to the readers. // Before publication, with the agreement of Oxford University Press, we made some technical adjustments to the original text to better suit the habits of readers in mainland China. If there are any shortcomings, we kindly ask the readers to point them out. // Commercial Press Editorial Department // July 1997
