Publication Date: 2002-10-01
Features: A Handbook for Self-Cultivation, Family Management, Governing the State, and Pacifying the World is a rare book in both ancient and modern times, serving as a guide for personal and national development. After its completion, A Handbook for Self-Cultivation, Family Management, Governing the State, and Pacifying the World was first circulated in manuscript form within a limited circle. The earliest published edition dates back to the 21st year of the Wanli era (1593). During the Qing Dynasty, bookstores continued to print it due to reader demand. Today, easily accessible editions include the Ming-era Excerpts from A Handbook for Self-Cultivation, Family Management, Governing the State, and Pacifying the World (2 volumes), the Zhengding edition by Lu Longqi in the 26th year of the Kangxi era (1687), the Selected Writings of Lü Zixu by Chen Hongmou in the first year of the Qianlong era (1736), the Lu Yanzhao edition in the 59th year of the Qianlong era (1794), the Collected Writings of Lü Zixu compiled and printed by Li Yuemei and others in the 7th year of the Daoguang era (1827), and the Chengde Hall edition in the 20th year of the Daoguang era (1820). This book is based on the Daoguang 7th-year edition, as the compilers of that edition undertook the work of "compiling and correcting from various editions." For accuracy, the editing and annotations of this book also refer to the Ming-era printed editions and the Qianlong-era editions for comparison and correction. A Handbook for Self-Cultivation, Family Management, Governing the State, and Pacifying the World consists of six volumes, divided into the Inner and Outer Sections. As it was a personal record spanning three decades, it was not written in a single sitting, and many parts of the Outer Section inevitably overlap with the Inner Section. Objectively speaking, the most brilliant parts are in the Inner Section.
