Why do I still get my period even if I don't ovulate?

Patient's question:

I am 27 years old, and now my husband and I are trying to conceive. The doctor suggested that we have intercourse during the ovulation period to increase the chances of getting pregnant. Why do I still get my period even if I don't ovulate?

Doctor's answer:

I will also have my period even if I haven't gone through menopause. This could be due to anovulatory menstruation, primarily caused by functional uterine bleeding. It could also be due to symptoms caused by choriocarcinoma, endometrial polyps, or submucosal fibroids. Patients should develop good daily habits, maintain a regular sleep schedule, avoid smoking and alcohol, and increase physical exercise to enhance their immunity and prevent the recurrence of the condition.
