What is the reason for leukorrhea being brown?

Patient's question:

25-year-old female has been feeling weak all over and lacking energy recently. I'm very concerned. Could you please explain what it means when leukorrhea is brown?

Doctor's answer:

The so-called brown color of leukorrhea is the color of blood clots. If there is minimal vaginal bleeding during the menstrual period, at the end of the period, or before the period, or even during ovulation, the leukorrhea may appear brown. Some people may also experience brown leukorrhea after sexual intercourse, which could indicate cervical erosion or other issues. During sexual intercourse, the eroded surface may be broken, small blood vessels may rupture, and a small amount of blood may be discharged, mixing with leukorrhea secretions to form coffee-colored or brown discharge. It is particularly important to emphasize that patients with ovarian cancer may also experience this symptom, and it may even manifest as more watery leukorrhea in the second instance.
