How long into pregnancy can a baby's heartbeat and fetal pole be seen on ultrasound?

Patient's question:

I'm still in school, 21 years old. I recently just found out I'm pregnant. I'm a bit young, and I don't know what to do. Please ask: How many weeks into pregnancy can an ultrasound detect fetal heartbeat and fetal buds?

Doctor's answer:

If a woman's menstrual cycle is usually regular, after confirming pregnancy, the embryo can generally be detected on MRI around 35 days after the last menstrual period. However, some patients may only be able to detect the gestational sac between 40 and 45 days. The appearance of the fetal heartbeat usually occurs later than the appearance of the embryo, and most patients can see the fetal heartbeat between 45 and 50 days of pregnancy. Some patients may only be able to detect the fetal heartbeat after 50 days (considering the possibility of delayed implantation). For women with delayed menstruation, the above time points are based on the normal time plus the additional menstrual delay duration.
