Patient's question:
I'm still in school, 21 years old. I recently just found out I'm pregnant. I'm a bit young and don't know what to do. Please ask: How many weeks into pregnancy can an ultrasound detect fetal heartbeat and fetal development?Doctor's answer:
If a woman's menstrual cycle is usually regular, after confirming pregnancy, the embryo can generally be detected on MRI around the time of the first missed period, approximately 35 days prior. However, some patients may only be able to detect the gestational sac between 40 and 45 days. The appearance of the fetal heartbeat usually occurs later than the detection of the embryo, and most patients can see the fetal heartbeat between 45 and 50 days of pregnancy. Some patients may only be able to detect the heartbeat after 50 days (due to late implantation). For women with delayed menstruation, the above time points are extended by the additional time of the menstrual delay on top of the normal timeline.
